You are ensuring that quality used books are available to you and future students at Muhlenberg and at other colleges and universities. And best of all, recycling textbooks is an environmentally sound practice. You DO NOT need a purchase receipt to take part in the buyback, however, MUST present a Muhlenberg College student I.D.
*** Note that we also buy back books NOT purchased at the 'Berg Bookshop.
OUR GOAL IS TO PURCHASE AS MANY BOOKS FROM YOU FOR THE BOOKSTORE, ENABLING US TO PAY YOU AS MUCH MONEY AS POSSIBLE.
How Buyback Works
Your books will have either a retail or wholesale value, or no value based on the following:
Retail buyback is available during finals week in May and December. You may receive up to 50% back on your books if the faculty member has ordered the book again by the time of our buyback. Faculty members are encouraged to provide their book orders by April 15th for summer and fall semester classes, and by November 15th for winter and spring semester classes. Timely book orders are the most important factor affecting the amount you receive for your books.
Wholesale buyback is available daily, Monday through Friday, from 8:30am to 11am and 12noon to 4:30pm. In addition to the end-of-semester buyback, we buy and sell books to used book wholesalers throughout the year, including the summer months. A wholesale value is typically 10-30% of the retail value of the book. We sell books to our wholesalers when we believe it will not be used again in the next six months. Books are revised often, therefore, it's too risky and costly for the Bookstore to hold onto a book without a confirmed order from the faculty member. We may offer you a wholesale value for your book if we are overstocked, even if we have an order for the book. Therefore, it's important to sell books as early during the week of finals as possible.
Unfortunately, not all books have a wholesale value. Some books cannot be bought back until we have an order for the book from the faculty member. A book may not have a wholesale value if a new edition is coming out soon, if there is more supply than demand for the book in the wholesale market, or not enough national demand. We are unable to purchase workbooks, damaged books, incomplete books, course packs, or titles pending a new edition. Books in the following condition WILL NOT be bought back: - No missing pages - No strong and/or musty odor, or strong cigarette odor - No ex-library books - No advance reading copies, uncorrected proofs, and/or promotional or "screener" copies of books - No books that state "not for resale" anywhere on the cover or inside. We also do not buyback course supplies such as safety goggles, molecular model kits, etc.
